ROCK & ROLL RADIO HISTORY: "THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED"...
THE MOST TRAGIC DAY IN THE EARLY YEARS OF ROCK & ROLL HISTORY WAS FEBRUARY 3, 1959...
...it was the day that the plane carrying Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and, The Big Bopper, crashed in a field near Mason City, Iowa.
DON McLEAN in his instant-classic hit "American Pie" (Released in the Fall of 1971) termed it "The Day The Music Died", and since then that's the way it's been known.
I've had this rare, historic, News Bulletin about the crash on that day, February 3, 1959, in my Archives for years, but I don't know where it was originally broadcast or who the announcer is. When I decided to add it to the WebSite, I added a little bit of music from Buddy Holly, and Richie Valens, PLUS, the voice of The Big Bopper with his legendary Intro to start things off...to give it a little more balance and give you a chance to hear their voices again.
This special, rare audio that your hearing is not very long...but it is very important. And, maybe next time when you hear Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, or, The Big Bopper on your radio you'll think about the musical legacy they left us, and remember that they left us way too soon.
SIMPLY Click-On Here , listen to this rare, historic News Bulletin, read my personal thoughts on this tragic occurence from 57 years ago, and, remember those 3 Legendary singers whose music will live on forever. JK
KSLQ-FM, St. Louis, in January, 1979...
IT WAS A BITTER, COLD, JANUARY in St. Louis in 1979.

If you ventured-out to the movies, "The Deer Hunter", "Every Which Way You Can", and, "Superman" with Christopher Reeve, could be your destination.
Yep, lot's going on in January of 1979, including "Super Bowl XIII" in which the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the defending Super Bowl Champs, the Dallas Cowboys, 35-31.

"1939: THE LOST WORLD OF THE FAIR", By David Gelernter. Avon Books, Pub. (1996)
IN 1939, the World was poised between The Great Depression, and, World War II. The 1939 New York World's Fair stood between both those world's, and tried to give us a look at "The World Of Tomorrow"...and how much better our lives could be.
David Gelernter's book is, at once, a history lesson, a love story, and, a look at a part of our culture that existed at that time...and somehow became forgotten.
This is truly a fantastic book ! If you read it you WILL learn from it...and my Review is ready for you right now...all you have to do, is CLICK-ON-THIS-LINK and it will take you right to the Library !
"PULP ART": Original Cover Paintings For The Great American Pulp Magazines, By Robert Lesser. Sterling Publishing Company, Inc., Pub. (2005)
I love art in all forms, and having met Robert Lesser many years ago, I can tell you that he is an expert: a collector, historian, and, writer of the highest caliber ! He was one of my earliest influences when I began collecting "Comic Character Art", in all its various forms, over four decades ago.
In this beautifully balanced volume, he hones-in on another of his, and my, favourite art forms: those dynamic, action-packed, vividly illustrated works of art that were created by some of the best artists you could imagine...and they were created, not for showings in galleries or museums, but as covers for the pulp magazines that dominated the newsstands during the 20's, 30's, and, 40's, selling for about ten cents each, and selling millions of copies in the process.
BUT, the artwork itself, was usually not kept, was discarded, thrown away...and it wasn't until a few decades ago that the importance of those paintings came to be accepted for what they really were: Not "throwaways", but genuine pieces of art in their own right !
Robert Lesser was at the forefront of this movement, and it's all explained, and the artists that did these fantastic pieces are all showcased, within the covers of this marvelous book !

THE EARLY YEARS ON TV: "IT WAS MAGIC !"
MY FIRST FRIEND & MENTOR in the world of show business was Magician ERNIE HELDMAN. I was a young Amateur Magician, Ernie liked me, and asked me to work with his Crew.

"THE AMAZING CRISWELL" TRIBUTE
MOST KNOW CRISWELL FROM the Iconic ED WOOD Classic "PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE"...but his career spanned over three decades, and he was known World-Wide. He was also my friend.
THROUGH THE YEARS, I've had a number of eMails, pm's, and, calls, about the yearly Dedication of my "HALLOWEEN FILM RARITIES LIST" to CRISWELL that you view at the Bottom of that Page. So, I decided that it was time I shared the information about Cris, our friendship, and, why he was an important part of my life, with all who come here to the Site.
In this Tribute, you'll see many great photos from my Archives/Collection - some that were packed away for over 50 years - read my personal memories, not only about Criswell, but about HOLLYWOOD: My first-impressions of Hollywood when I landed there in 1962, where I lived while I was there, how Cris & myself met, and the strange-but-true connections that he and I had.
Again, producing this Tribute to Cris was very meaningful to me as it brought back my thoughts, memories, and, feelings of a "by-gone era"...the Hollywood, Los Angeles, and, Southern California mystique & reality that permeated the 1940's through the 70's.
I was privileged to be a part of that scene & culture at one time, and sharing my stories with you is truly a way of giving you further insight to myself, my friends, and, how it all had blended together through the years into my career that wouldn't be possible without your continued kindness & support.
"THE AMAZING CRISWELL" TRIBUTE STARTS WHEN YOU CLICK-ON THIS SPECIAL LINK . Enjoy ! JK
